Callington Heritage Centre

Newsletter     The Exhibitions    The Restoration    Our Collections

Callington Heritage Centre is situated in the chapel on Liskeard Road, Callington. It opened on 2nd June 1994 and was modernised and re-launched on 22nd July 2006. On the 4th of March 2007 it suffered a disastrous fire, when an electrical fault meant that the entire roof of the chapel was lost.  Miraculously we were able to save 98% of the artefacts and archive material. However this meant that for the 2007 season the Heritage Centre did not  open.

The Heritage Centre will re-open on 12th April 2008

and will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 10.00-16.00hrs until the end of October

Fires in Callington and the History of the Callington Fire Brigade

Our first exhibition this year is a tribute to those brave and skilled men and women of the fire brigade. Without their swift action on the 4th March we would not have a heritage to restore.

With the help of Les Pierce, an ex-fireman, we have studied the history of the Callington fire brigade since the earliest records. We have tales of the local tradesmen’s horses being borrowed to pull the fire appliance, of the onlookers being roped in to pump the appliance, or the Council dustcart which pulled the pump at a top speed of 8.mph.

The story of our local brigade is also looked at through the major events in the area starting with the serious church fire of 1895 to the time the fire station caught on fire and they couldn’t get in to get to the fire fighting equipment, to the more recent great Kelly Bray fire and our own chapel fire. The fires featured cover several parishes as the brigade covers a wide area. Of course the fire service do more than fight fires, there are stories of dogs being rescued from mines and even the call about a cow that was stuck in a tree which everyone was certain was a hoax until they got there.

As well as the exhibition on the fire service there are small exhibitions on the Saltash Road School, the railway, Old Cornwall and the brassière.

PLEASE HELP US RESTORE THE COLLECTION

Thanks to many financial donations and to all the dozens of volunteers who gave their time, all the collection has been cleaned, re-organised and relocated. There is just some final checking to do and then we will rearrange all the thousands of photographs. We now need to raise:-

£2500 for the restoration of our Victorian books

£5000 for the restoration of one box of porcelain

How can you help?

Please look at our publications, if there is anything you wish to purchase this will help to give us the income we need to maintain our archive and to pay for specialist restoration of damaged items.

If you wish to request research, we can still do this. Our Family History page outlines some of the material we have.

If you would like to make a donation, please visit the publications page

Become a 'Friend of the Heritage Centre'. For a small subscription you will receive a quarterly newsletters giving you the latest updates, research articles, information, details of our latest acquisitions etc. Go to the Publications page.
