PICTURES FROM THE PAST

This new feature will, each month bring you an old photograph of Callington and a present day one for you to compare. Any contributions to this section are welcomed, old photographs or postcards can be brought into the Town Hall for scanning. Photos of previous residents from the 19th early 20th century would also be welcome.

The old photographs on this page are courtesy of the Callington Museum, who have a large collection. Why not visit them, they may have pictures of your house or the area in which your house now stands.

VILLAGES AROUND CALLINGTON

The River Lynher just to the north of Newbridge, with Frogwell Mill on the right hand side. Note the different course of the river. Circa 1915.

Cheese Wring Village, now known as Minions on the moors near Caradon Hill. All buildings shown remain, but there are additional buildings now in the view.

A view of Gunnislake, believed to show Pearsons Quarry in the foreground. Circa 1910

Venterdon Village near Stoke Climsland at the turn of the century

Whiteford House. This was situated to the south of what is now Duchy College. It was built in 1770 by Sir John Call. The Manor House was demolished in 1910 after a fire, but the walled gardens and associated buildings still survive.

This photograph of the Old School will be the same date as the picture of Venterdon above.

The entrance to Stoke Climsland Village. The Half Moon Pub on the left is now a cottage
