THE HONEY FAIR

Wednesday 4th October 2006

On the first Wednesday in October each year, the Honey Fair brings to the town street traders, entertainers and exhibitors from far afield. Thousands of people flock to the unique annual event

In 1267 Henry III granted Callington a market charter as a means of raising funds for the rebuilding of Westminster Abbey.  The charter gave Callington permission for a weekly market and annual fair. It was revived in 1978 and once again it is an established tradition, and is now run by Callington Lions Club.

Attractions usually include many street and charity stalls, a shop window competition and a visiting Fun Fair.  There is a honey product competition and honey products are on sale all day. There is often street entertainment.

People can be seen in costume and our Town Crier as well as visiting Town Criers from adjacent towns are usually out and about All this creates a wonderful atmosphere that should not be missed.

For the day parking is available at the Saltash Road car park and subject to the ground being dry enough the Saltash Road Recreation Field is also used for parking. If you live in town you are advised to walk into the centre. Any enquiries about the Fair can be directed to David Jones on (078 750 75755

NEW BLOOD NEEDED FOR CALLINGTON LIONS

The Lions are a group of men and women from all walks of life who belong to an international organisation whose motto is "We Serve". They give practical help to, and raise funds to support, anyone in need, either locally, nationally or internationally. Beneficiaries locally have been play groups, youth organisations, senior citizens, the disabled, and so on. Weekly, on Sundays, there is a hospital-visiting transport service for those without any other means of travel. Eye camps and water wells have been sponsored in developing countries.

They raise funds from annual events such as Honey Fair, Gala Day and the "Walk Through the Daffodils" as well as other big events such as concerts, pantomimes, duck races, bingo, seasonal draws, provision of bars, barbeques, stalls at events in Callington and the surrounding villages.

Apart from the fun and fellowship of participating in the above events, they also have their own social events, including quizzes, skittles, challenges with other clubs, excursions, foreign trips, social evenings, an annual anniversary dinner/dance and other activities.

If you feel that you would like to know more about Lionism, possibly with a view to becoming a member or simply offering occasional help with Lions' activities, please contact Ken Aspinall on 01579 383703 (daytime) or 01579 383135 (evenings).
